چکیده

In this paper we study the connection between four models describing dislocation dynamics: a generalized 2D FrenkelKontorova model at the atomic level, the Peierls-Nabarro model, the discrete dislocation dynamics and a macroscopic model with dislocation densities. We show how each model can be deduced from the previous one at a smaller scale. AMS subject classifications: 35B27, 35F20, 45K05, 47G20, 49L25

Towards Macroscopic Plasticity from Microscopic Discrete Dislocation Dynamics

Dislocations are topological line defects in the crystalline structure of a lattice. They carry a vectorial charge with units of length and magnitude at the Angstrom scale. Being defects in the lattice structure, they induce high localized stresses in the body. Their motion in huge numbers produces permanent deformation of macroscopic solids (i.e. ductility) of the order of doubling or halving ...

Simulation of Pedestrian Dynamics with Macroscopic and Microscopic Mathematical Models

Here, we collect two parts of a research project on the pedestrian flow modeling. Rapid growth in the volume of public transport and the need for its reasonable, efficient planning have made the description and modeling of transport and pedestrian behaviors as important research topics in the past twenty years. First, we present a macroscopic model for the pedestrian flow based on continuum mec...

Mesoscale model of plasticity

A framework for investigating plasticity phenomena and their dependence on the underlying physical and size-dependent mechanisms is developed. The framework is based on crystal plasticity and three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics analyses. Particularly, the mesoscale model couples continuum crystal plasticity framework with a set of spatio-temporal evolution equations for dislocation ...

Scale-free intermittent flow in crystal plasticity.

Under stress, crystals irreversibly deform through complex dislocation processes that intermittently change the microscopic material shape through isolated slip events. These underlying processes can be revealed in the statistics of the discrete changes. Through ultraprecise nanoscale measurements on nickel microcrystals, we directly determined the size of discrete slip events. The sizes ranged...

Plastic Flow in a Composite: A Comparison of Nonlocal Continuum and Discrete Dislocation Predictions

A two-dimensional model composite with elastic reinforcements in a crystalline matrix subject to macroscopic shear is considered using both discrete dislocation plasticity and a nonlocal continuum crystal plasticity theory. Only single slip is permitted in the matrix material. The discrete dislocation results are used as numerical experiments and we explore the extent to which the nonlocal crys...
